Why 'Knowing Your Options' Matters in Birth. If I don’t know my options, I don’t have any. -Diana Korte Options matter when it comes to childbirth. I once heard from a woman who was in the late stages of her pregnancy. "I'm just going to go to the hospital & have my baby.. women have been doing this for millions of years, I'm not going to be doing anything new.." Responding to being asked if she prepared for birth, the answer was no and this was the given reason. She only saw one option for her situation.
While her statement is mostly true, there is a significant & crucial part missing in it. Women, for millions of years, have been having their babies undisturbed. This, coupled with trending societal beliefs & mind-sets makes for a very dangerous & misinformed view of birth. On top of this are the various risks of giving birth, many of which cannot be minimised without the mother & father/other parent knowing more about birth & the impact it will have on their lives. The Many Benefits of Co-SleepingCo-sleeping used to be a somewhat controversial subject, with some thinking it was a hazardous undertaking. Today, the benefits & the importance of co-sleeping are widely known by many in the medical field. There are even ‘baby-friendly’ hospitals incorporating co-sleeping from day one post birth. Sleeping with your baby after they are born is one of the most natural things & most rewarding things you can do. Even more than breastfeeding which sits at the top of important health & wellness factors for your child, co-sleeping has the unique gift of setting you and your child up for a lifelong healthy & loving connection.
Nurture your being through NatureSpending quiet time in your favourite nature hangouts is a key element to cultivating mindfulness. Sure, you can cultivate mindfulness anywhere, being in nature is not a pre-requisite. Nature, though, has the added benefit of connecting you to your origins, grounding you & bringing you back to centre, which makes practicing & recognising mindfulness a whole lot easier.
